Fiji upset by butter rise

(N.Z. Press Association—Coj>»ri»ht> SUVA, August 31. New Zealand had breached a butter agreement with Fiji, the Prime Minister (Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara) said today.

The price of butter in Fiji has been increased by 6c per lb. One of the main factors in the increase was a rise in the cost of New Zealand butter, which is blended with Fiji butterfat. After a Cabinet meeting, Ratu Mara said the New Zealand Dairy Board wanted Fiji to commit itself to continue to buy its butter needs from New Zealand. The board also wanted to be free to alter prices. The Prime Minister said the Government was not prepared to agree to that. He said the Fijian Government would tell Wellington that the agreement between the New Zealand Government and Fiji had been breached. Fiji would not be prepared

to go on buying New Zealand butter under the condition that it would not be able to buy cheaper butter elsewhere, he said.
