‘SPY FOR ISRAEL’

Egyptian arrest (N.&.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAIRO, August 5. Egypt’s military intelligence service has arrested a former Egyptian' soldier—who was said to have swum the Suez Canal to defecton charges of spying for Israel, the authoritative Cairo newspaper "Al Ahram” reported today. "Al Ahram” said that the man, named as Adel Aah Zeidan, was alleged to have deserted from his unit and

swum across the Suez Canal to join the Israelis under cover of darkness in July, 1968.

He remained in Israel for three months, receiving training in the recognition of military equipment—particularly Naval units—and other espionage work, the newspaper said.

Then he was taught to speak with a Jordanian accent, given a forged Jordanian passport and sent back to Egypt to spy, "Al Ahram” said.

It said that Zeidan arrived in Alexandria in November, 1968, after a tour which had taken him to Athens, Rome and Khartoum.

He continued to pass information to the Israelis until he was arrested last January at his home in the act of transmitting a message by radio, it said.
