Qantas bomb case remand

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright; SYDNEY, August 5. After 10 weeks of world-wide investigation, an Englishman and an Australian who are alleged by the police to be the Qantas bomb-hoaxers were remanded in the Central Criminal Court in Sydney today.

Peter Pasquale Macari, aged ,35, an Englishman, whose address was not given but who was alleged to have absconded from bail in Britain m 1969, and Raymond James Poynting, aged 28, a barman, of Bondi, were charged with demanding money with menaces. No pleas were entered, and the two men denied bail, were remanded in custody until August 12. The police prosecutor, Inspector V. Taylor, told the Court that Macari had admitted being the elusive “Mr Brown” who,, on May 26, (negotiated the. payment of I $500,000 by Qantas for in-

formation about a bomb said to be on a Hong Kong-bound Boeing 707 jet. Of the ransom money, $27,061 had been recovered

from Poynting’s flat, Inspector Taylor said. The police had information concerning large spending by Macari, which would account for part of -he missing money, he added.

Opposing bail, the inspector said that other, and graver charges would be preferred against the two men. The inspector did not disclose the nature of the offence for which he said Macari was wanted by the British police, but described it as a serious charge.
