WIN FOR TORIES

Strike bill approved

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

LONDON, August 5. Britain’s Conservative Government won an eight-month struggle in the early hours of today, when the House of Commons approved the Industrial Relations Bill, the most controversial measure of the year. The bill, designed to curb the wave of wildcat strikes that has adversely affected the British economy, was passed by 254 votes to 217, a Government majority of 37. Royal assent is expected later in the. day. Approval of the measure which was introduced last December and intended for enactment by Easter, came after months of delay forced by the Labour Opposition and the trade union movement. The struggle involved debate over apparently endless amendments, all-night Parliamentary sittings, and a series of one-day strikes by union militants pledged to kill the bill, which they view as “an employers’ charter.”
