Tokyo arrest disclosed
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright? TOKYO, August 5. Japan has lodged an official protest with the Soviet Ufiion. the Tokyo police having announced the arrest of a Japanese dealer on suspicion of passing confidential documents on United States military bases in Japan to a Russian diplomat in Tokyo. The Japanese, Kazuo Kobayashi, aged 41, a dealer in radio equipment and amateur radio enthusiast, was arrested on July 21. A Foreign Ministry official delivered a verbal protest to the Soviet Union Ambassador (Mr Oleg Troyanovsky), who was called to the Ministry in Tokyo. Mr Kseisuku Arita, the head of the Ministry’s European and Asian Affairs Bureau, is said to have told the Ambassador: “As SovietJapan relations are developing in various fields, it is extremely regrettable that a staff member of the Soviet Embassy in Japan has been involved in an unfriendly action contrary to Japanese law.”
A Soviet Union diplomat, Lieutenant-Colonel Lev Kononov, aged 38, who was the assistant military and air attache, left Tokyo yesterday for Moscow with his Wife. His departure was confirmed by the Soviet Embassy, which made no further comment.
