SILENT CALLS
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 3. The secretary of the Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality (Mr T. O. Newnham) is the target of silent protest. Last month people telephoned Mr Newnham—an active anti-apartheid campaigner—and threatened him and his family with violence. “The only noticeable difference now is that nobody speaks,” said Mr Newnham today. “We have about the same number of calls but there is. no answer, just silence.”
Mr Newnham said that he normally received ajjout six such telephone calls* night. Now, when he and his. family went to bed, the telephone receiver was usually left off the hook.
