YOUTH CAMP TO OPEN
Project begun in 1968
Begun in 1968, and built mostly by voluntary labour, the Seventh Day Adventist Church Youth Camp will be officially opened on August 29 by the Minister of Tourism (Mr Walker).
The camp is about 69 miles from Christchurch, at the foothills of Mount Hutt, and is accessible at all times of the year.
Since work was begun, 110 voluntary working bees have been held at the site, with an average attendance of eight persons, and altogether 8800 hours of voluntary labour has been given. The only professional labour required was for highly specialised work, such as plumbing, drainage, and electrical fittings. Various leaders in the Seventh Day Adventist Church will be present at the opening. They are the president of the Australasian division (Pastor R. R. Frame), the president of the TransTasman Union (Pastor C. DJudd), and the president of the South New Zealand Conference (Pastor K. J. Bullock). Pastor C. G. Allen, director of public relations for the South New Zealand Conference, said that the camp had been built because the church recognised the need for youth to get away from the rush of the - city and bright lights to an environment conducive to their over-all development, spiritually, morally, socially, and physically. Activities at the camp will include youth leadership workshops, training in citizenship and community service, junior camps, church conferences, youth Bible conferences, youth week-end camps, and ministerial conferences.
