Arms may hold key
' (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright» JERUSALEM. August 4. The United States Assistant Secretary of State (Mr Joseph Sisco) is expected to hear a renewal of Israeli pleas for more arms from America at a meeting today with the Israeli Prime Minister (Mrs | Meir) and other Israeli officials.
Israel has asked the Nixon Administration to supply it with F 4 fighter-bombers (Phantoms) which it contends are necessary to offset Russian weapons in Egypt. Mr Sisco may travel to Cairo early next week after talks with the Israeli leaders. Officials in Washington did not rule out the trip, but s.aid that the decision rested with Mr Sisco.
Washington has not answered the Israeli request for arms, and this is believed to be one of Mr Sisco’s most powerful bargaining points in his attempt to reopen the Suez Canal. The Israelis have agreed in principle to a partial withdrawal and a token Egyptian police force on the East Bank. But they have refused to allow freedom of movement for the Egyptian Army on the Sinai Peninsula and Egypt has refused to accept these restrictions.
