Qualifying tournament
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. The two young members of the New Zealand Davis Cup squad, J. Q Simpson annd D. A. Parun, both won their second-round matches in the Wimbledon qualifying tournament at Roefa ampton.
Simpson beat J. Guerrero (Spain), 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 8-9, 6-2, in a marathon match, and Panin beat an Australian, R. J. Frawley, 6-2, 7-5, 7-5. Miss C. Fleming (New Zealand) was beaten in the second round of the women’s singles by Miss A. T. Colman (Australia), 6-3, 6-4. J. Hrebec, .the 23-year-old
Czechoslovakian, achieved the distinction of beating a second old master—South Africa’s A. Segal—in the men’s singles. T. Brown, beaten by J. Kramer in the 1947 Wimbledon final, was Hrebec's first victim in the opening round. Hrebec played superbly to beat the 41-year-oid Segal. 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.
