One per cent aid
Sir,—Optimistic statements from time to time about the increase in our national overseas aid-giving have led me to believe that the target of 1 per cent of the national income is almost achieved. What a fallacy! It is shocking to read in Peter Brett’s letter that the total increase is barely more than a hundredth part, bringing the total to 034 per cent. He goes on to express doubt as to whether at this rate the hungry millions will wait for the 17 years it will take to reach the goal. At the speed at which things move todav mav they even wait 17 months? New Zealand is sometimes termed “a paradise”. Let it . not be a para-
■ dise of fools. Can nothing be • done to hasten the issue? , Yours, etc., NEEDS MUST . . . I June 17, 1971.
