Denniston incline
Sir,—After reading your article I intended to visit Denniston but from your
correspondents’ letters I probably would be disappointed. It is not clear whether the Government decision to dismantle this remarkable example of engineering was made after discussions With the Historic Places Trust and interested local parties. Too often the iron hand to officialdom is as destructive to places of historic interest as the natural processes of rust and decay. Surely this is one of those places where our pioneering heritage cannot be valued in terms of so much scrap-iron.—Yours, etc., ACTION, NOT APATHY. May 19, 1971.
