Unlighted trains
Sir,—l support M. D. Harvey’s complaint about stationary trains at night over the crossings at Rakaia. Some time ago on a dark night we almost collided with one on the Mount Somers - Thompson Track crossing. Not a light down the line nor up the line apart from township lights. We went back to find the engine right in Rakaia. I would like to emphasise how hard it is to see these almost invisible trains on a dark or foggy night. If there are no lights visible on the line and one approaches an unlit crossing there is barely time to register and pull up once the headlights have picked up these nearly black trucks. This particular crossing is extremely dangerous to the motorist, especially approaching from the Methven side, day or night. Warning lights are urgently needed here, as this is now a main route.—Yours, etc., G. M. GERARD. Montalto, May 19, 1971.
