SCHOOL’S EXERCISE
Community living
An exercise in community living, organised by 26 Form VII pupils and three staff members of Riccarton High School, was held at Temple Basin, in the Arthur’s Pass National Park, from April 1 to April 17. “A lot of time was spent in discussion of relationships with one another,” said the principal of the school (Mr T. R. Hitchings) at the school’s board of governors’ meeting on Wednesday. “Hostilities between nonprefects and prefects were aired and practical suggestions were made to relieve tensions,” he said. All students participated in studies in geography, oioiogy and statistics, whether they took these subjects at school or not. Outdoor activities were organised and the party went tramping in mountain bush. “A closer bond was established within the group, and a sense of belonging was achieved,” said Mr Hitchings. The students felt that they had experienced a greater awareness of the need to be co-operative and thoughtful, he said.
