NEW FIRE STATION
A new fire station will be built in Simeon Street, Spreydon to replace the present Sydenham Fire Station in Colombo Street, said the chairman of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board (Mr N. G. Pickering) at its meeting last evening. The station, to house one fire engine, with facilities to take two in an emergency, will be started next year. The station and site will cost about $60,000. It will be about a mile and a half from the Sydenham station, and will maintain a similar fire coverage to the older parts of Sydenham while improving fire coverage to Halswell, Hoon Hay, Sockbum and Hornby. The station will not resemble the conventional fire station but will be designed to blend in with the surrounding properties. The site is a little more than 40 perches. An old house on it is to be demolished. “The eventual sale of the Sydenham station may well offset the cost of the new one,” Mr Pickering said. The 15 officers and firemen would move from the Sydenham station to the Simeon Street one.
