Population changes
Continued housing development on the outskirts of Christchurch has resulted in a population increase of 14 per cent in the Heathcote
County in the last five years, according to provisional census results released by the Government Statistician (Mr J. P. Lewin) yesterday. Heathcote County, which at the last census in 1966; had a smaller population than; Ellesmere County, has now; outstripped Ellesmere, which I
had a population increase of 5 per cent over the last five years reflecting the growth of Lincoln. Heathcote County now has a population of 7563, compared with Ellesmere’s 7505.
As against these increases in population, the census results show that the .populations of the Geraldine and Cheviot counties declined by 3 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively, giving them! populations of 4476 and 1522.1 Temuka Borough’s popula-i Ition rose by 5.3 per cent to ;3315, but the population ofi ; Winchester Countv Town, (four miles north of Temuka,
declined by 7.4 per cent, to 250.
County towns in the Canterbury area which have increased in population since the last census are Akaroa and Kaikoura, which increased by 11.3 per cent and 2.2 per cent, to bring their provisional 1971 figures to 638 and 1606 respectively. On the West Coast, the decline in mining activity at ißunanga has led to a population decrease of 14 per cent jin Runanga Borough, while 'further south, the borough iof Ross has fallen to 429, a ! decline of 1.6 per cent, says I the statement
