Skeet title shoot-off

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. The Sydney shooter, M. J. Fuller, who has competed at the New Zealand trap - shooting championships on many occasions, yesterday won his second New Zealand fern when the 1971 championship tournament continued on the Hamilton Gun Club’s grounds at Melville.

The chief interest centred on the 1971 national skeet championship which was the first of the five important title events to be decided at the tournament. The event attracted a record entry of 185 shooters and the match did not conclude until late in the even-

ing. Fuller, along with a leading South Island shooter, T. A. Everett (Christchurch) shot brilliantly in the match to return possible scores of 50 and contested the shootoff to decide the title. Fuller sustained his excellent form in this shoot-off when he recorded yet another perfect round. Everett, rather surprisingly, dropped three targets. SECOND N.Z. TITLE Yesterday’s success ■ was Fuller’s second New Zealand title. He won the singlebarrel championship in 1965. Fuller is one of the most experienced trap-shooters in the Southern Hemisphere. He has competed in the United States, Australia and New Zealand as Well as in other countries.

The two-man team skeet championship held in conjunction with the individual event, proved a clear-cut win for the South Canterbury representatives, T. P. Hayman (Waimate) and A. W. H. Walker (Hakataramea), whose score of 96 was two better than that of the joint runners-up, R. J. McGregor (Gisborne) and R. H. Cooper (Gisborne), J. L. Gorton (Makaremea), and D. J. McGregor (Balclutha), and B. J. Anderson (Mount Maunganui), and J. R. Thomson (Rotorua). The Rotorua team of J. R.

Thomson, W. E. Hamill, R. Sloane, P. Keegan, and J. Chilcott, won the five-man team championship with 235 targets out of a possible 250, with Otago second with 231 targets. TRAP BREAKS DOWN Unfortunately, the New Zealand international trapshooting championship, which began on Sunday and was to be concluded today, had to be abandoned, as the trap specially imported for the match, broke down and repairs cannot be completed before the tournament ends.

The Newstead shooter, C. Lusby, won the motor-car trophy, valued at $llOO, which attracted 151 entries. Lusby, along with 11 other competitors, broke the possible 30 targets. The possible winners soon narrowed down to the ultimate winner, and J. G. Corbett, of Tokoroa. Corbett missed his fiftysecond target in the. shootoff, and, as he was the first shooter, Lusby had to register another hit before taking the car. He broke his target with the first barrel.
