Car insurance

Sir,—This association takes issue with the statements in your editorial on Friday regarding repairs costs. You intimate that the increased cost of third-party insurance is governed by rising costs, and wages of hospitals. Surely you would concede this also applies to repairers of motor vehicles. The reason why a panel-beater asks, “Is this an insurance job?” should be obvious. When a vehicle is insured work cannot commence until a detailed price is established between the assessor, acting on behalf of the insurance company, and the repairer. Repairers do not charge insurance companies more than the individual and claims assessors do all in their power to keep costs to a minimum to protect their companies* interest and the general public as a whole. To the knowledge of this association no extra work is done to a vehicle and charged to an insurance company.—Yours, etc., A. J. SHEARD, Secretary, Canterbury Motor Body Builders’ Association. March 29, 1971.
