Typists’ salaries
Sir',—For the difficulty the ; Public Service has in filling senior shorthand-typing posi- ' tions, I would suggest three possible reasons: (1) The streaming at Form 111 into commercial courses of girls who are unsuitable, uninterested, or not yet ready to decide on a career. Girls with I.Q.s of 80 have been streamed into shorthandtyping, when they would have done far better in home craft. (2) The lack of status of office work in New Zealand. Girls who have completed a good professional or general course are encouraged to enter university, teachers’ college or nursing, when they are often more temperamentally suited to office work. (3) The almost universal adoption in New Zealand of Pitman shorthand, which, in my opinion, is as difficult as Latin. The Gregg system can. be learned in a fraction of the time, and it is far easier to transcribe, while being capable of all speeds required for public examinations.— Yours, etc., (MRS) M. E. RITCHIE.
