Finance for paraplegics
About $l5OO towards the proposed new paraplegic hostel to be built at Burwood was raised by the New Brighton Lions’ Club on Saturday at a market day held at New Brighton in conjunction with a sponsored wheelchair trek organised by the Canterbury Paraplegic Association.
It is expected that between about $6OO and $7OO will be raised from the wheelchair trek. This money will be used to help send a New Zealand team to the Paraplegic Games to be held in conjunction with the Olympic Games in Munich next year. About 14 paraplegics, including one man who made a special trip from Waimate, and one girl, took part in the trek over five miles from Woodham Road to the clock tower at New Brighton. Entrants were sponsored at various rates for every quarter of a mile they covered, and about 10 managed to complete the five miles.
The president of the association (Mr C. J. I. Wadley) said yesterday that it was expected that each entrant would have raised between $4O and $5O.
