Salvationist appeal
In spite of the stormy weather conditions late on Saturday afternoon which brought the Salavtion Army’s annual house-to-house Community and Overseas Service Appeal to an early end, the response was better than in previous years, said the divisional commander (Lieu-tenant-Colonel T. McKenzie) yesterday.
With more collectors out than before, the total amount collected in Canterbury was $lB,OOO, with at least another $2OOO expected from outlying areas and those districts which were not covered on Saturday, said LieutenantColonel McKenzie. Members of the Salvation Army Band of the Congress Hall, Sydney, who have been visiting Christchurch, helped collect in the morning before leaving for Wellington. People whose envelopes have not been collected should be visited by a collector during the week or on Saturday.. "I would like to express our gratitude to the citizens of Christchurch and Canterbury for their most generous response,” said LieutenantColonel McKenzie. Throughout the country mpre than ,$120,000 was raised. This was an increase of 11 per cent on the total last year.
