OLYMPIC RULING
Status of amateurs (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LAUSANNE. The International Olympic Committee has published a proposed new rule banning from 'the Olympic Games all those who make money out of sport through professionalism or advertising. Designed to maintain the amateur status of the Games, the proposed new article 26 of the Olympic rules has been sent to all 74 international sports organisations which are members of the committee for a postal vote, after being unanimously adopted by the executive committee in Lausanne earlier this month. The result of the vote is expected by mid-April. The new rule forbids the use of an athlete’s name in advertising and the payment of broken time except in deserving cases authorised by national Olympic committees or international federations to cover loss of salary during sports meetings. The rule adds: “It is intended to eliminate those who are interested in sport for financial reasons.”
