(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. W. Bochow, dropped from the West German squad, hit back yesterday by becoming the first player from his country to qualify for the men’s singles semi finals of the All-England badminton championships, the world’s major tournament. The 26-year-old Cologne physical education teacher beat another unseeded player, the England international, R. Stevens, 16-18, 15-5, 17-15. Bochow had to pay his own expenses after being dropped from Germany’s squad.
He will meet the Indonesian, Muljardi, in the semifinals. Muljardi beat the Danish No. 2, E. Hansen, 13-18, 15-12, 15-5.
The tournament favourite, R. Hartono, champion for the last three years, provided Indonesia with its second semi-finalist. He outstayed the Danish No. 3, S. Pri, 15-3, 15-10, in a repeat of last year’s final. His opponent in the semifinals will be the unseeded Dane, K. Kaagaard. He beat a fellow countryman, T. Nielsen, who retired with a damaged ankle when the score, was one-set each.
