Price of chocolate

Sir, —I did not say what Government I desired. I said that when a Labour Govern ment was elected and had to pass measures that would hit workers, self-employed, and employers, the workers might vote it out. Some workers are very fickle, as when they reviled Bob Semple. He was the workers’ best friend. If costs are high, so are wages. I shore 1600 sheep to buy my first bicycle. Now 350 would be required. I had to work half an hour to buy a loaf of bread and an hour for a pound of butter. Probably chocolate was a luxury. If there is lack of money to buy food there seems plenty for beer and gambling.—Yours, etc., R. March 24, 1971. [This correspondence is now closed. Ed., “The Press.”]
