Noisy neighbours
Sir,—lt would certainly seem that the Christchurch City Council is loath to do anything about noise. Do the councillors not know that the Auckland City Council recently passed a very comprehensive by-law against noise? If Auckland can do it why can’t we?—Yours, etc.. E. M. CARTER. March 7, 1971. [The chairman of the Christchurch City Council’s by-laws committee (Cr H. P. Smith) replies: "There is little value in making by-laws that prove impractical to administer. As yet there has been no real solution to providing just and reasonable control of residental noise which does not infringe the basic freedom of the individual citizen. A good deal df investigation has already been done, and when an acceptable solution can be reached then action can be taken. If Mr Carter has any views on this subject I would be happy to receive them.”]
