Fire at Gebbies Valley
Sir, —I join with Mr Holdemess in thanking all those who helped with the fire. However, I would like to -go a bit further. In the present drought conditions, in spite of a closed fire season, some person saw fit to light this fire. Did ■ the Wairewa ; fire officer issue a permit' for this? If not, what action does the county council intend to take? I. imagine there will be a pretty big bill for the damage and gear needed to fight this fire, and as a ratepayer of Wairewa I object strongly to the county’s paying it without an effort to make the person responsible bear his share. I would certainly hope that a public statement is made on the council’s intentions.— Yours-, etc.,. t ■ ; RATEPAYER. March 17, 1971. Pbe chairman of the Wairewa County Council (Mr W. C Miller) replies: “The council will consider this matter when all,the facts, are available, and take such action as they consider necessary.”]
