POPULATION 2,857,862
Increase of 1.8 per cent (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 23. For the year ended December 31, 1970, there was a population increase of 49,272 or 1.8 per cent, bringing the provisional total population to 2,857,862, the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) said in a statement. Calendar year increases, for the two previous years were 32,324 or 1.2 per cent (1969) and 29,173 or 1.1 per cent (1968). December quarter increases over the last three years have been: 1968, 18,906; 1969, 22,467; and 1970, 28,737.
Natural increase—that is excess of births over deaths —was 10,531 for the December, 1970, quarter compared with 10,201 and 10,112 for the corresponding quarters of 1969 and 1968, respectively.
