Overseas League

Sir, —I was indeed distressed by your report of the annual meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Royal Overseas League. I did not know that a reporter was present at the meeting, and we have not had one present at any of the previous annual meetings at which I have presided. Had I known that he was there, I would have supplied him with a note of the agenda and a copy of toy annual report. In dealing with the report, the remarks I made on finance and on attendance at some evening meetings were domestic matters and were only a small part of my general remarks. Taken by themselves, they present a completely distorted picture not only of what I said, but, more importantly, of the activities of the league in Christchurch. The remarks were intended for members only, and were aimed at getting support for dealing with a situation which I felt should not be allowed to develop. They were certainly not intended for publication. The annual report dealt with various activities of the league in Christchurch, and among them the sponsoring of a boy for the Outward Bound School. I feel that this would have been of greater public . interest than the domestic matters dealt with. —Yours, etc., J. H. WAKEFIELD. Immediate past president, Royal Overseas League, Christchurch branch. March. 20, 1971.
