Sunday morning encounter

Sir,—Returning home last Sunday morning i I saw a young man slumped over the doorstep of a little fruit shop in Papanui Road. As I got closer I realised there was

no need for concern. He was waiting for the shop to open and so enraptured with a new-found friend he was completely oblivious of everyone and everything else. He was caressing and softly crooning tender endearments and melody to her in his native Maori, and kissing and whispering unashamedly into her ready pink ear. She, too, was obviously enraptured, it was a heart-warming but poignant sight and I don’t think I have ever heard a kitten purr to loudly. This little scene provided me with food for thought and reflection, and I offered a little “Thank you” prayer for one of these blessed experiences in miniature which come to us all from countless sources. It also vividly brought home to be the deep loneliness of many people.—Yours, etc., NIGHT NURSE. March 15. 1971.
