Batsmen on top at Elmwood

A perfect wicket on Elmwood Park No. 2 enabled the batsmen of both teams to dominate play between Old CoUeglans and East Christchurch-Shirtey. East-Shirley batted first after winning the toss and it went to lunch at 129 for four after a solid innings by J W. Grocott of 69, which Included 11 fours. After lunch the score was pushed along by V. Pollard and A. L. Andrew In a ehase for P«rformance _polnte. N. G. Clark, who had gained a minor success in the morning play by taking two wickets with three balls, was really savaged by these two batsmen, and after being hit for 18 from one over was withdrawn from the attack. Pollard was very strong in front of the wicket and went on to make 73 before being caught on the boundary. His Innings included a six and eight fours. T. D. Gibson was also the victim of hard hitting but emerged with four for 100 to gain the best performance for Old Collegians. East’s innings of 250 took only 213 minutes and the side gained seven performance pointe to four by Old Collegians. After losing Its first wicket for 17, Old CoUeglans batted confidently to be 128 for one at the close of play. It was a slow start, the first 50 taking 75 minutes, but D. S. Banks and G. Mathias gradually took hold of the bowling and the second SO took only 31 minutes. A left-hander playing In his second senior match, Mathias revealed a very fluent off-drive and was 67 not out at stumps; Banks was still there with 45. Pollard and Banks both passed the 500 mark for the season: P. R. Joyce reached 450, and Gro-
