B.E. Congdon stars with century for Nelson
A century to the New Zealand test cricketer, B. E. Congdon, was the highlight of the twoday, minor associations’ cricket match between Nelson and North Canterbury at Dudley Park, Rangiora, at the week-end.
Batting for Nelson, Congdon > scored 109 in 175 minutes to help 5 his side to a first innings win. i The match developed into a i: first innings struggle after North Canterbury batted most of Satrurday before being dismissed for ■ 363. Nelson in reply was 415 I for eight wickets when Congdon J declared shortly after 5 p.m. yesi terday. P. Williams top scored for .iNorth Canterbury with 79. He was well supported by S. Blakely j(37), R. Sowden (46), and R. New‘ton (48), before G. Smith caused
a minor collapse when he took three quick wickets. However, the Canterbury Plunket Shield fast bowler, R. Merrm, boosted North Canterbury’s score with a fine 75 before being stumped by K. J. Wadsworth, the New Zealand wicket-keeper. Smith, and the leg-spinner T. Beatson. were the most successful bowlers, each taking three wickets. The highlights of Nelson’s innings were Congdon’s century and a fine 88 from Wadsworth. D. Rackley (46) and L. Reade (39) were the other successful batsmen. Newton, with his mediumpaced off-cutters, bowled a marathon 31 overs to take five wickets for 107. Marrin was the only other North Canterbury bowler to have any great success, taking two for 74.
