Sixes hit freely in match at Ham
Although the pitch at Ham was on the slow side, the even bounce encouraged attacking batting and the 85 overs bowled produced 347 runs. Included in this were nine sixes. R. K. Allen gave West Christ-church-Unlversity a fine start with attractive, attacking batting. He scored 64 of the 84 runs in the flr»t-wlcket partnership with G. T. Dowling, hit 12 fours and scored his runs in 80 minutes. This opening stand must have given High School Old Boys’ captain, C. J. Stevens, cause to rue his decision to send his opponents In to bat. G. T. Dowling made 54 in his usual competent fashion and B. F. Hastings contributed 35 with clean, well-hit shots. A. R. Hounsell and S. T. Chambers both bowled well for High School Old Boys, the left-armer, Chambers, again showing himself as a young player of high promise.
When High School Old Boys began their innings, the pitch looked in a condition to favour the West Chrlstchurch-University spinners but again it belled its appearance and gave the batsmen few worries. Stevens and V. A. Bishop hit hard from the start and with C. L. Bull and M. L. Ryan batting confidently High School Old Boys looked capable of matching the five batting points won by West.
