WOMAN BURNED
A Kaiapoi woman suffered first and second degree burns to her back when flames from a barbecue unit set fire to her clothes at the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show on Saturday. The woman, Mrs C. Meredith of Cass Street, Kaiapoi, was treated at the show grounds by Dr A. H. Meikleham before being taken to Burwood Hospital by a St John Ambulance Association ambulance. The accident occurred after alcohol was poured on to the fire to improve the flame. The grass near the barbecue caught alight and the fire ran close to several parked cars, before it was extinguished. Mrs Meredith’s condition was reported to be satisfactory last evening.
