Standing ovation for voung drum-major
(N.Z. Press Association/ DUNEDIN, Mar. 21. An immaculate display of staff flourishing by the young St Andrews College drum-major, D. A. Solomon, received a standing ovation from the crowd of about 15,000 at Carisbrook today on the last day of the New Zealand pipe band contest
Competing against men many years his elder, he turned on a polished performance and stole the title.
The president of the Highland Pipe Bands Association of New Zealand (Mr T. A. Gordon) said that he didn’t think that in the 25 years since he had been associated with pipe bands, he had seen such a large crowd give a standing ovation to a drum-major. The A grade championships were completely dominated by the Pipes and Drums of Innes Tartan from Auckland. This band won the street march, drum-major’s display, test selection, quickstep, and drumming, completely scooping the pool.
