Advice on the deaf

Advisory services were needed to ensure that parents of deaf children were given more frequent support, a lecturer in education of the deaf at Christchurch Teachers’ College (Mr M. Parsons) said yesterday. Mr Parsons was commenting at the conclusions of a two-day course arranged by the Canterbury Parents of Deaf Children. “This course was a tremendous success in that it was organised by parents. This is very significant,” he said. “Another feature is that parents have recognised a need for an extension of the (advisory services offered by (the Department of Education, for deaf children,” he said.

I “We have a good system, but this needs developing to cope with pre-school children and to give assistance to those teachers of ordinary classes which contain deaf children.”

It was important that parents realise that the family situation was most important in the education of the deaf child, Mr Parsons said.
