Keats beaten by Whelan
(N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. M. Whelan, who as a junior was a provincial 440 yards representative, won the Auckland centennial marathon championship on Saturday in the good time of 2hr 23min 38sec. Whelan shattered a tight bunch of six fc’ith a lightning burst of speed from the 15rnile mark. carried him out to such a long lead that at 23 miles he survived the loss of two minutes for an emergency toilet stop, and still won from the former Olympic representative, I. Keats, by 2min 16sec. G. Douglas (Manurewa) was third in 2hr 26min 12sec.
