NAXALITE VIOLENCE

Preventive bill enacted

(N.Z.P.A-Rcuter— Copyright) NEW DELHI, Nov. 23. The Indian President (Mr Giri) yesterday signed a bill aimed at tackling the continuing wave of violence and murders in West Bengal. The Bengal Prevention of Violent Activities Bill gives immediate special powers to the state authorities to detain suspects without trial, and arrest anyone inciting violence against the Government. It is directed specifically at the Naxalites, militant Maoist revolutionaries responsible for nearly all the 60 murders in West Bengal over the last five weeks and for daily bomb attacks on schools, colleges, Government offices, and police. At least 40 policemen have died in Naxalite assaults since last March, when the state’s Communist-dominated government collapsed in a wave of political clashes, and the Central Government took over the state administration.
