Toll of alcohol on Aust, roads

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Nov. 22. Post-mortem examinations on 171 drivers kilted in Australian car accidents had shown that more than 60 per cent had an illegal amount of alcohol in their blood, a Melbourne conference on alcoholism was told yesterday. Dr Donald Hossack said that he had carried out 400 examinations of the bodies of people killed in road accidents in the last two years, and alcohol was clearly a significant factor. More than 60 per cent of the drivers killed had a bloodalcohol content above the legal limit of 0.05 per cent, 50 per cent of passengers were over that limit, along with 57 per cent of pedestrians. Dr Hossack said that these figures were conservative, because many people died in hospital without undergoing blood analysis.
