Attempts at records
Several of Canterbury’s leading under-age athletes will compete in the Ashburton club’s meeting this evening in an attempt to break Canterbury records. Among them are D. Green (Christchurch), who will be trying to lower the under 17 boys’ 800 metres record of Imin 57.1 sec, and his clubmate, D. Pickles, will attempt to lower the under 15 grade record of the same event. This stands at 2min o.2sec. Miss Denise Shield (Christchurch), who ran an impressive 2min 32.45ec in the open women’s 800 metres at Rugby Park on Saturday, will attempt to break the girls’ under 15 record of 2min 41.5 sec, a time well within her ability. A third form pupil at Mairehau High School, she is only 13.
