QUEENSLAND MATCH DRAWN Centuries to Boycott and Edrich

(N.Z. Preu Association—Copyright) BRISBANE. G. Boycott and J. Edrich both scored centuries as M.C.C. drew its four-day match against Queensland at Brisbane Cricket Ground yesterday.

There being no chance of a positive result, the Englishmen turned the final day into a batting exhibition and at die close M.C.C. was 418 for four in reply to the state side’s first innings total of 360.

Boycott’s hundred was his third of the tour and his innings ended when he retired hurt at lunch with an injured right leg after making 124 in 263 minutes, including 14 fours and a six. The M.C.C. captain, R. Illingworth, described Boycott’s injury as a very slight muscle strain. He said that the Yorkshire opener would definitely be fit to play in the first test, which will begin at Brisbane on Friday. Boycott and Edrich resumed yesterday morning with the total 111 for one. They were in no hurry at the start and put on only 15 runs in the first half-hour. The scoring rate gradually picked up, however, and a single by Edrich completed the century partnership in 131 minutes. Soon afterwards Boycott moved to his hundred in 241 minutes. K. Fletcher joined Edrich when Boycott retired and the pair added 62 before Edrich was caught by T. Graveney at gully off Keith Dudgeon for 120. Hie left-handed Surrey opener completed his century in 242 minutes with eight boundaries.

B. D’Oliveira was the third man out when he drove Duncan to S. Trimble at extra cover and in the final over of the match Fletcher fell to R. Parker, having made 77 in 217 minutes. There was better news yes-

terday of the M.C.C. fast bowler, K. Shuttleworth, who injured his right elbow in a throwing competition on Sunday. Shuttleworth arrived at the ground in the morning with his arm in a sling but later warmed up in the nets with no apparent discomfort. The manager (Mr D. Clark) said: “Ken is perfectly all right now. Apparently he put the sling on as a hoax.” The mass-circulation "Sunday Mirror” has offered to pay 10s a run to the highest scoring M.C.C. batsman and £lO a wicket to the bowler who dismisses most Australians in the test matches. The newspaper said it was doing this as a “sporting gesture to members of the England cricket team struggling to find their form in Australia.” It conveyed the offer through the former England test captain, E. Dexter, who is in Australia as the “Sunday Mirror" writer on the tour. Dexter had replied: “The bonus scheme can put extra zest into M.C.C. in Australia. “The amazing success of the Australian dollar a run contract between South Australia and the South African, Barry Richards, who has scored 200 agrainst M.C.C. and 356 versus Western Australia, can easily have the same positive effect on the tourists.” Scores in the Queensland match yesterday were:— QUEENSLAND First Innings .. 800 sTTrtmble 177) M.C.C.
