Few swimmers named

Only three members of the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games swimming .team have been nominated for the national training schools to be held between December 26 and January 9.

When nominations for the schools closed late yesterday afternoon 86 had been received, although more could be in the post, said the general secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association (Mr A. W. Barrett). The three Games swimmers nominated are M. Troffers (Southland), and Misses S. Hunter (Canterbury) and B. Williams (Auckland).

Nominations had not been received for M. Borrie and B. Bond (both resident in Otago) or for Misses C. Whiting and J. Wright (Canterbury), and

F. Crawford and G. Stirling (Auckland). Otago nominations might be in the post, said Mr Barrett. Waikato most Three other centres, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Eastern Districts (South Island), had not submitted nominations. The greatest number from one centre was 32 from Waikato and among the names were A. Kindred, G. Campbell and Miss H. Coombridge, all national title-hold-ers. The Auckland centre nominated only Misses Williams and B. Macrae; Canterbury nominated 10. Manawatu also submitted 10 names, including that of Miss J. Uttley. The chairman of the association’s council (Mr A. J. Donaldson), said last evening that coaches have always objected to losing their identity through swimmers attending schools. The council appreciated this but it con-

sidered collective training schools with a competitive atmosphere were much better for the swimmers. "A good example of this was the Mexico Olympics, when coaches were left to their own devices with subsequent poor results. It is a question of how long we can go on hoping coaches will come up with an outstanding swimmer,” he said. “Still eligible” The training schools would go ahead as planned, said Mr Donaldson and those who had not been nominated could still be considered for the team which would follow the Canadian-American tour in February. They would have to produce an international time, however, before they were considered. The Canterbury nominations for the schools are: B. Lewis, R. Gray, M. Tembath and Misses Hunter, J. Parkhouse, L. Rowe, J. Tomlinson, P. Home, J. Hay and M. McManus.
