Roberto de Vincenzo, the grand master of Argentine golf and the 1970 World Cup champion, says he will only play in local tournaments from now on, and may retire altogether in three years. De Vincenzo, aged 47, the son of Italian immigrant parents, is credited with almost single-handedly making golf a popular sport in Argentina. 1 He was cheered by a gallery of thousands recently as he came from two strokes behind on the final round to overtake D. Graham (Australia), and win the individual scoring title with a record cup low score of 269. Australia won the team title.
De Vincenzo previously had helped Argentina win the first World Cup tournament in 1953, and was individual champion in 1962. He is credited with 153 tournament victories, including the 1967 British Open, in a professional career that has spanned 30 years. “This was the last world championship that I will win in my country,” de Vincenzo said of his latest victory. “I have travelled too much during the years, now I want to be able to enjoy my home.” De Vincenzo said that
