Ship blown on shelf

(N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Nov. 22. After a two-hour, struggle in which she was blown against a papa shelf by galeforce winds, the 484 ft ship Vanguard, was berthed safely at the Gisborne overseas wharf on Friday night. Arriving in ballast direct from Japan, the ship was caught in a sudden squall in which the wind quickly increased from 15 knots to 34 knots.

The deputy harbourmaster (Captain J. W. Cook) said that the Vanguard had been blown sideways for about 600 ft until it rested against the papa shelf on the western side of the harbour.
