Lifeboat slip

Sir, —I would like to ask that a balance-sheet showing costs involved in the ccnstruction of the new slipway for the Sumher lifeboat, be published after the work is completed. It is pitiful to see the rate of progress on this work, and I am sure that such a balance-sheet would disclose a very interesting set of figures for interested ratepayers.—Yours, etc., INTERESTED RATEPAYER. November 17, 1970. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “The costs of altering the lifeboat slip will be available in due course. Some time ago tenders were called for this work and the prices were considered too high. The council is grateful to the Lyttelton Harbour Board which, at considerable inconvenience to itself, agreed to undertake the work, and the present indication is that the cost will be little more than half of the contract price. As tides will be unsuitable during the next few weeks the work is likely to appear slow. To expedite the work would involve more underwater work and increased costs.”]
