Sir, I wish to point out to “Coogee Bear” that there are many people who have not been able to provide for a comfortable existence in old age because of unemployment in the depression of the 1930 s and bringing up families on low wages. “Coogee Bear” would no longer regard age beneficiaries as vegetables and liabilities to the State if he visited them, entertained them in his
own home, or took them for a drive in his car. The age benefit is not charity, as is supplementary assistance, as it is not begged for by the needy applicant. Yours, DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST. November 20, 1970.
