Pensions
Sir, —What has happened > to this country of ours? Has the Welfare State made us 1 lose our sense of proportion? 1 Why do so many feel that it is the Government’s duty to nurse us from cradle to grave? “Forgotten Mum and Dad” have obviously forgot- 1 ten that the privileges of universal superannuation, fam-' ily benefits, etc., which are regarded as a right by so many, at one time did not exist. Surely a family is the responsibility of the parents, not the Government. Cannot the benefits presently payable be accepted gratefully, without complaint? Why should those, who by dint of hard work and thrifty habits, or by remaining in the work force either by choice or necessity after normal retirement age, and who consequently have a higher income than those who have not provided for retirement or who do not choose to work be penalised by a means test? Let us stifle initiative no further, stop wingeing, and be thankful for what we have.—
