... so does Gray
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. The former All Black, K. F. Gray (Wellington) was chosen as the “international sportsman of the year” at a function in Auckland last night. It was organised by the Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality and the University of Auckland international affairs committee in protest at the selection of Dr D. H. Craven as guest
speaker at the New Zealand “sportsman of the year” dinner, which was also held last night. Miss M. Snow, the New Zealand athlete, was chosen as runner-up to Gray by the 100 guests who attended, while the American Negro tennis player, A. R. Ashe was placed third. About $5O was collected for a contribution to the World Council of Churches fund to combat racism. Guests made their choice for the “sportsman or sportswoman who has during 1970 done most to advance the Olympic ideals of sport, for all without discrimination as to race, colour or creed.” Gray did not make himself available for the All Black tour of South Africa, and Miss Snow said she would refuse to compete in the athletics team that entered the South African all-white games.
