Kent wins award
'(N.Z. Press Association/ I AUCKLAND. The Commonwealth Games; cycling gold medallist, H. D.[ Kent, was last night named! as the 1970 New Zealand “Sportsman of the Year” at! the dinner organised by the Murray Haiberg Trust for Crippled Children.
The 23-year-old nursery-; man was also awarded the; Wellington “Sportsman of! the Year” trophy earlier this! week. Presenting the trophy to Kent, last year’s winner, C. B.; Bouzaid. the yachtsman, said! it was a great honour to represent New Zealand and Kent/ had done a tremendous job! in winning a gold medal. ! Then to go on and gain!;
[second place in the world championship was even greater. Second to Kent was the All i; Black, B. G. Williams, who . received 110 points compared ‘(with Kent’s 172. Then came the world ; speed-way champion, I. Mauger, 99 points; G. M. Turner (cricket) and C. E. Meads j (Rugby), both on 79; E. J. [McDougall (golf) was sixth with 76 and 27 other sportsmen totalled 162 points between them. Mr Haiberg. chairman of jthe trustees, said that the net profit from the dinner was about $6OOO. Six hundred jpeople attended. 1 No decision had yet been I made on the venue for next I year’s dinner.
