§47,000 In Prizes Prize money totalling $47,780* will be involved in the Post Office bonus bonds draw today. It will be the fifth draw since the scheme began. The registrar of the bonus bonds centre (Mr J. S. Asher) said in Dunedin yesterday that prize money had increased by $3450 since the August draw, and the number of prizes had increased by 241 to 2476. A total of $14,714,857 had been invested in the bonds scheme to the end of August. The next draw would take place on the second Tuesday of October.— (P.A.)

Tropical Training One hundred and twenty soldiers from the Ist Battalion Depot, Burnham Military Camp, left Christchurch aboard two R.N.Z.A.F. Hercules yesterday for a week of jungle training in Fiji. The first Hercules left at 7 a.m. and the second three hours later. The commander of the detachment, LieutenantColonel A. T. A. Mataira, is the commander of the Ist Battalion Depot. The training is in preparation for later service in Singapore.

River Protection The abolition of the Waiau Township River Protection District will be recommended by the Amur! County Council to the North Canterbury Catchment Board, the council decided after considering a letter from the board asking for the council’s views. The County Clerk (Mr B. J. Peters) reported that the district had been formed in 1909 and there Was a record that the district was to have been abolished in 1940. The formal steps were apparently not taken. The board will be advised that no work has been done on the scheme for 30 years and that the council does not intend to provide for maintenance.

Animal Sunday

Prayers, hymns, a lesson, and a sermon theme suitable for an “Animal Sunday” service bave been sent to churches of all denominations throughout New Zealand by Mr R. J. Glen, of Christchurch. In a covering letter, Mr Glen asks churches to observe Sunday, October 4, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, as a day of prayer for animals. At least one Christchurch church has already announced plans for a special “Animal Sunday” service. It is St Peter’s Anglican Church, Upper Riecarton, which has organised the service at the invitation of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Gang Show Plans Preliminary planning for the 1971 Gang Show of the Canterbury scout area had begun, said the director (Mr D. C. Collins) on Saturday. As this will be the tenth show, held biannually, it is planned to feature the anniversary and incorporate some of the most successful items of the show’s life in Canterbury, as well as new material. The show will be presented in August, 1971, and auditions for the 100 performers will be called in April and then heard in small groups.
