Dates Estimated For Law Courts Complex

It would be several years before work on the proposed new Law Courts complex began and up to 10 years before it was finished, said the chairman of the Canterbury Provincial Buildings Board (Mr M. A. Connelly, M.P.) at a meeting t o establish a Provincial Buildings promotion committee yesterday.

Therefore, the Justice Department would occupy the wooden portion of the Provincial Buildings for many years yet, he said. The Government had agreed to contribute $50,000 towards restoration of the wooden buildings provided local authorities promised the same amount. Contributions of $46,000 had been promised, with one local authority yet to decide.

The Government would vest the wooden portion of the buildings in the board soon. Mr Connelly warned that it would take probably four years for restoration work on the wooden buildings to be completed. A representative of the New Zealand Institute of Architects would be consulted when plans for the restoration work were being worked out—and that could well take eight months.
