LEAGUE MATCH AT NIGHT
The Vivian Cup Rugby league challenge match between Marist-Western Suburbs (holder) and Linwood will be played under floodlights on September 30.
The Canterbury board of control last evening approved the night game. The venue either English Park or Denton Oval, will be decided at the next meeting. This is believed to be the
first time in the history of the code in this province that a match will be played under lights.
Linwood earned the right to challenge when it beat Papanui, 22-18, in the second major championship semi-final on Saturday. Marist-Western Suburbs won the cup from Papanui late last season. Because of the Thacker Shield match between the champion clubs of Canterbury and West Coast at Greymouth on September 27, no week-end date was available before the end of the season. Kicking Competition Clubs will be invited to nominate up to three players from any grades to take part in a goal-kicking competition on September 19 and 29. The elimination rounds will be completed before the Gore Cup (bottom four) final on Sep tember 19. The finalists will compete for a prize given by the Canterbury Supporters’ Club •as a curtain-raiser to the championship grand final the following day.
